Mitre Saws
Mitre Saw Stands
The original mitre saw was a manual metal frame saw that
housed a saw suspended on rollers in a metal guide, that
allowed making accurate crosscuts and mitre cuts. These
saws are still available and are fine for the woodworking shop
that only handles small jobs and fine work such as picture
framing.
Todays woodworking shop would find a mitre saw almost
indispensable. A woodworking power tool used to make a
quick, accurate crosscut in a workpiece. The basic miter saws
only cut straight or horizontal angles up to 45 degrees in both
directions, while compound
models, because the motor tilts, can also do
bevelled edges. While generally used to cut wood some plastics
and light metals can also be cut with the tool. . Most miter
saws are relatively small and portable, with common blade sizes
ranging from eight to 12 inches.
The miter saw makes cuts by dropping a spinning
circular saw blade down onto a workpiece in a controlled
motion. Sliding saws allow you to slide the blade forward for
cutting larger and oversize pieces. The woodwork is typically
held against a fence, which provides a precise cutting angle
between the blade and the longest workpiece edge. In the
standard cutting position, this angle is fixed at 90°.
Features of various models of miter saw and
radial arm saws.
A compound mitre saw allows the angle
of the cutting blade to be changed relative to the horizontal
plane. This key feature is the ability of the motor
and blade to tilt in either direction, thus allows the
saw to be used for bevel cutting, making it a much more
versatile piece of equipment than the typical compound
saw.
Radial arm saws are versatile, which makes them an
essential bench saw for many workshops. They allow you to
do a wide variety of cuts including crosscutting, ripping stock
and dado work. In addition, they tilt for cutting miters and
bevels.
Laser guides in mitre saws allow precise visual indication
of the saw cut to be performed. Some models have a single line
that sits on one side of the kerf and others have dual lines
that indicate the kerf width.
Safety clamps allow the work to be cut to be directly
clamped in position for cutting. Ideal for awkward and small
work pieces.
Dust bags on mitre saws allow the sawdust to be drawn away
from the work area.
Saw blade guards are an essential item on any power saw, as
a with a mitre saw they have self-retracting blade guards,
which automatically retract when the saw is lowered onto a
workpiece and re-cover the blade when the saw is lifted.
Quality Miter saws such as DeWalt Mitre
Saws are durable, light and portable allowing easy
transport for project, make them an essential power tool for
any woodwork enthusiast.
